The area provides some of the best conditions for an exciting
fallow deer hunting. The stalking of a thophy has proved to
be a challenge and requires hunter's best ability for a successful
hunt.
An adult buck measures 90 cm (35 inches) at the shoulder,
and may weigh between 64 and 91 kg (140 - 200 pounds).
The wild type is reddish brown above, flecked with white
spots, with a white rump patch with dark borders. In winter
the coat is gray-brown with less distinct spotting. Fallow
deer are of a number of colors forms like yellow brown, black
and also albino. The young buck set of antlers is broader-stemmed
and the adult set becomes markedly flattened and shove- like.
The fallow deer rut starts as the red deer rut peters out,
and finishes around the beginning of May.
These animals are mainly diurnal and generally prefer open
country, often fleeing into open fields even when hunted,
waiting there for the "all clear" signal.
Fallow deer live in herds, with males establishing territories
during the breeding season. After the rut the bucks gather
into all-male herds.
When fallow deer perceives some danger signal they run like
a goat to alert the herd, visually and soundly.
